Curriculum Update

Word Work for this Week:

Spelling patterns: - ill (ex: fill, still, grilled)

                            - ick (ex: lick, stick, flicker)

Math:

This week we started our new unit on Data!  In this unit we will learn to collect, interpret and represent data

Writing:

In writing we are continuing to write about different topics that teach.  Your child is learning to use labels to teach, and self-assessing to set goals for themselves.

Science:

We started our new unit in science this week called Balance and Motion.  This week we will be talking about balance.  Ask your child tonight how they balanced the crayfish using counterweights?

Reading:

This week we are learning about nonfiction texts and how to get started as a nonfiction reader.  We will be chatting about what is happening in nonfiction text.      

Things to know:

• 6:30-8:30 PM - Family Dance Party in the Gym. This is not a supervised event; please plan on attending with your children. Forms are due by Dec. 7
• Continue to read for your Six Flags Ticket.  In order to receive a Six Flags ticket your child will need to read six hours and complete the form.  Reading Logs are due February 2!

Math:

We will finish up Topic 5 called Work with Addition and Subtraction Equations.  After completing Topic 5 we will take the Unit assessment over Topics 1 - 5 at the end of the week.

Writing:

In writing this week we start our new unit called Non Fiction Chapter Books.  In this unit your child will write many teaching books about many different topics. The unit also teaches them to tell across their fingers,use illustrations to teach, and then write about their topic.   

Social Studies:

We will finish up our unit on Thanksgiving this week and then we will start our new unit in Science next week.

Reading:

We finished up our unit on Word Detectives last week and this week we start our new unit on Nonfiction Reading.  This will tie together with our nonfiction writing unit.      

Things to know:

• Continue to read for your Six Flags Ticket.  In order to receive a Six Flags ticket your child will need to read six hours and complete the form.  Reading Logs are due February 2!

Math:

This week we will be working on subtraction strategies, and solving word problem with facts to 20.  We will also start our new Topic 5 unit called Work with Addition and Subtraction Equations.

Writing:

In writing this week we will finish up publishing our narrative writing story and then start our new unit on Nonfiction Chapter Books.  In this unit of writing your child will be writing about a topic to teach us about something they know or want us to know about.   

Social Studies:

We will continue to talk about the holiday Thanksgiving.  In our talks we will discuss pilgrim life, Wampanoag indians and Squanto.

Reading:

We will finish up our unit on Word Detectives and start our new unit on Nonfiction Reading.  This will tie together with our nonfiction writing unit.

This week we will be taking a look at fact families and related facts.  We will also use addition facts to find subtraction facts.   

Writing:

In writing this week we looked at the endings of our stories and how to wrap up our writing pieces.  We will find a writing piece to publish and start the process of publishing.  

Social Studies:

We are talking about the holiday Thanksgiving. We are comparing Thanksgiving now to the "First Thanksgiving."

Reading:

Your child will learn about how to use parts of words to help them solve new words, and they will watch out for unusual words.    

Things to know:

• Six Flags Reading Logs went home on Friday and they are due February 2.  In order to receive a Six Flags ticket your child will need to read six hours and complete the form.  
• Veterans Day is Friday! Please have your child wear red, white and blue.
